Overview
***This position will be physically located on Ascension Island in support of AFCAP***
Under the supervision of the Deputy Fire Chief, the incumbent is responsible for assisting the designated Fire Chief and Deputy Chief in managing the administration of the training program within the Fire and Emergency Services department at Ascension Auxiliary Airfield (AAAF).
This position operates under broad direction and is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the department's comprehensive training program to ensure full compliance with:
+ DoDI 6055.06, DoD Fire and Emergency Services Program
+ AFI 32-2001, Fire Emergency Services Program
+ Applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, as prescribed by Department of Defense and U.S. Air Force regulations.
The role requires coordination with leadership to maintain operational readiness, ensure personnel meet required certifications and qualifications, and implement a comprehensive training program that supports the U.S. Space Force mission requirements on Ascension Island.
Responsibilities
+ Directs a professional training team and supports operational leadership in ensuring the Fire and Emergency Services (FES) team remains fully trained and mission-ready.
+ Evaluates training staff and firefighter performance against established objectives and training benchmarks.
+ Mentors department personnel in their professional development, certification progression, and continuous improvement.
+ Manages the Fire Department Training Program and is responsible for developing and implementing the annual training plan in accordance with DoDI 6055.06, AFI 32-2001, and applicable NFPA standards.
+ Collaborates with Assistant Chiefs and Shift Training Officers to develop, coordinate, and execute training programs that support the department's Performance Work Statement (PWS) and operational mission at Ascension Auxiliary Airfield.
+ Conducts training needs assessments using incident response data and readiness evaluations to align training objectives with operational requirements.
+ Oversees the administration of the DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program, ensuring all personnel maintain required certifications.
+ Develops Job Performance Requirements (JPRs), lesson plans, annual training schedules, instructional materials, and evaluation tools to support a dynamic, competency-based training framework.
+ May assume fireground roles, including Training Officer or other Incident Command System positions, during emergency responses or exercises as needed.
+ Coordinates and schedules training across all three shifts to ensure 24/7 operational coverage and certification sustainment.
+ Provides instruction and facilitates certification training for department personnel and coordinates with U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force agencies as required.
+ Develops mutual aid training opportunities and maintains professional partnerships with supporting fire and emergency services entities.
+ Represents the Fire Department in training-related events, inspections, and evaluations, supporting mission assurance and operational excellence.
+ Performs other duties as assigned in support of fire department operations and U.S. Space Force mission objectives.
Qualifications
Education/Certifications:
+ High school diploma or equivalent is required.
+ Associate's degree or higher in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or a related field is preferred.
+ One year of directly related experience may be substituted for each year of education, if a degree is not held.
+ Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Licenses/Certifications:
The following DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certifications (IFSAC or ProBoard accredited) are required:
+ Airport Firefighter
+ Firefighter I and Firefighter II
+ Fire Officer III
+ Fire Instructor III
+ Fire Inspector II
+ Hazardous Materials Incident Commander
+ Driver Operator - ARFF
+ Driver Operator - Pumper
+ Driver Operator - Mobile Water Supply
The following certification is preferred but not required:
+ Fire Officer IV
+ Fire Inspector III
+ Fire & Life Safety Educator
Experience:
+ A minimum of five (5) years of combined experience in a municipal, civil aviation, or military fire service environment is required.
+ Must have at least two (2) years of experience in a supervisory or training leadership role, preferably within a DoD Fire & Emergency Services organization.
+ Demonstrated experience in the development, delivery, and management of fire and emergency services training programs in compliance with DoDI 6055.06, AFI 32-2001, and NFPA standards.
