Food Hero is a culinary school and food incubator dedicated to bringing nutritious, culturally relevant meals to communities across Chicago. Our mission is to empower people through food by providing high-quality culinary education, kitchen space, and catering services. We specialize in Medically Tailored Meals, Latin-inspired menus, and innovative community dining experiences. The Catering Chef is responsible for planning, preparing, and executing high-quality meals for catered events of all sizes. This role requires creativity, organizational skills, and the ability to lead a kitchen team in a fast-paced, off-site environment. The Catering Chef ensures exceptional food quality, presentation, and compliance with food safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, test, and refine seasonal and event-specific menus in collaboration with the Executive Chef.
Coordinate logistics for catered events, including ingredient sourcing, food preparation schedules, transport, and on-site setup.
Supervise culinary staff during event prep, execution, and breakdown, maintaining a positive and efficient kitchen environment.
Ensure dishes are prepared to Food Hero’s standards for taste, nutrition, and presentation.
Maintain accurate food cost controls by minimizing waste and optimizing inventory.
Uphold all food safety and sanitation protocols according to local health department regulations.
Communicate effectively with clients and event staff to accommodate dietary restrictions and special requests.
Assist with staffing plans for events, including scheduling and training temporary or contract kitchen personnel.
Manage catering kitchen equipment, including maintenance and organization of tools used for off-site events.
Contribute to Food Hero’s mission by providing culturally relevant meals that reflect the diverse communities we serve.
Requirements & Qualifications
Proven experience as a chef in a catering, banquet, or high-volume restaurant environment (minimum 3-5 years preferred).
Culinary degree or equivalent hands-on training.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and direct kitchen staff.
Excellent time management, organizational, and multitasking abilities.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed for events.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for event travel (if transporting food/equipment).
Physical stamina for standing long hours, lifting heavy items (up to 50 lbs), and working in variable environments.
Food Handler Certification or ability to obtain upon hire.
